The last and largest sector in which oil has remained dominant is road transportation (passenger cars, commercial vehicles and trucks). While the car and truck fleet will continue to expand with population growth and rising global economic activity, major efficiency improvements and the introduction of vehicles running on electric power, fuel cells, biomass and natural gas, are expected to have a major impact on the oil consumption in the long term.
