Roger Brown is CEO of VARO Energy, a joint venture between commodity trader Vitol SA, Private Equity investor Carlyle Group and Reggeborgh BV. The company, with a turnover of approximately $11Bn/yr, is headquartered in Cham (CH) and operates in the Downstream Oil Sector. Employing 1,100 people Varo owns 2 Oil Refineries, 47 distribution terminals and 240 gasoline retail sites in NW Europe. Previously Mr. Brown was CEO of Klesch Petroleum and had various management roles during a 25 year-career in the downstream industry with BP Oil International.
Mr. Brown joined BP after completing his degree in Engineering Science at Loughborough University of Technology. Between 1985 and 2000, he worked in various Marketing, Supply and Trading roles in London, Kuwait, Australia, Singapore and Dubai. On returning to London in 1999, Mr. Brown became General Manager for BP’s Commercial Refining and Trading organization, where he was responsible for optimizing the supply of Crude Oil and Products to BP’s European Refining and Marketing businesses. In 2000 he became COO of BP’s European Integrated Supply and Trading Business.
In 2003 he moved to Moscow as Vice President of Downstream Finance, Planning & Performance Management for the newly formed TNK-BP joint venture. After 5 years of successfully building TNK-BP into a fully integrated downstream business, Mr. Brown moved to California in 2008 to run BP’s US West Coast Downstream business. This included the Carson and Cherry Point Refineries and the Arco Retail Gasoline chain together with associated Terminals and Pipelines.
