Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber is a minister of state of the United Arab Emirates and member of the federal cabinet. As minister, he is responsible for handling strategic portfolios. He is also chief executive officer of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, or ADNOC, overseeing the operations and growth of the group.
Prior to taking on the leadership position at ADNOC in 2016, Dr. Al Jaber was chief executive officer of energy of Mubadala, the Emirati government’s strategic investment arm and principal agent in the diversification of the U.A.E. economy. He drove the growth of Mubadala’s strategic energy investments across two key portfolio companies, Mubadala Petroleum and Masdar, the largest exporter of renewable energy in the Middle East.
Dr. Al Jaber spearheaded the launch and establishment of Masdar in 2006, and continues to drive the company’s strategic direction as chairman of the board of directors. He has pioneered efforts to create economically viable renewable energy solutions through research and development, sound investments and innovative public-private partnerships.
Dr. Al Jaber also holds several leadership roles and advisory positions, and counsels on issues related to energy, economics, strategic communications and sustainable development.
He is chairman of the U.A.E. National Media Council, and an active member of the Emirates Diplomatic Academy board of trustees. He is also chairman of Abu Dhabi Ports, and serves on the board of Emirates Global Aluminum, one of the five largest aluminum companies in the world.
Dr. Al Jaber has served on the United Nations Secretary General’s High-Level Group on Sustainable Energy for All, known as SEforALL, since 2011, and in 2012 he was recognized as a “Champion of the Earth,” the United Nations’ flagship award for outstanding visionaries and leaders in the fields of policy, science and entrepreneurship. In 2013, he was appointed an honorary Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Dr. Al Jaber holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Southern California and received his Ph.D. in business and economics from Coventry University in England. He also graduated with an M.B.A. from the California State University, Los Angeles.
