Stefano Cao is an Italian engineer and senior business management executive with vast experience in the energy and infrastructure sector.
Since April 2015, he has served as chief executive officer of Saipem S.p.A., a leading global company in the engineering and construction and drilling business lines, with a strong focus on oil and gas-related activities in remote areas and deep waters.
After graduating in mechanical engineering from the Sapienza University in Rome, Mr. Cao began his career with Eni Group in 1976, first in Saipem S.p.A. where he became executive chairman, and subsequently in Eni S.p.A. where he served as chief operating officer of the exploration and production division.
From 2009 until 2012 Mr. Cao was managing director and chief executive officer of Sintonia, a holding company in the infrastructure sector established as the result of a joint venture between Edizione Holding, Goldman Sachs Infrastructure Partners, Mediobanca and Singaporean sovereign wealth fund G.I.C.
Other positions held include chairman of Eni Corporate University and chairman of Assomineraria. He has previously been a member of the board of directors of Telecom Italia, Aeroporti di Roma and Autostrade per l’Italia. He has also served on the management board of Italian utility company A2A, and as a nonexecutive director of Petrofac Ltd.
