Prior to his executive roles with Total, Patrick Pouyanné held various positions in the French industry ministry and other ministerial offices, including environment and industry, technical advisor to the prime minister from 1993 to 1995, and chief of staff to the information technology and space minister from 1995 to 1996.

In 1997, Mr. Pouyanné joined Total as chief administrative officer of Total Angola and later became group representative in Qatar and chief executive officer of Total Qatar in 1999. In August 2002, he was appointed senior vice president, finance, economics and information systems. In 2006, he became senior vice president, strategy, business development and research and development, and was appointed a member of the group’s management committee.

In 2011, Mr. Pouyanné was appointed executive vice president, chemicals, and executive vice president, petrochemicals. In 2012, he became president, refining and chemicals and a member of the group’s executive committee. In 2014, he was appointed chief executive officer of Total. In 2015, he was elected as a director of Total S.A. for a three-year term. In 2015, he was elected as chairman of the board of directors effective for the remainder of his term of office as director.

Patrick Pouyanné is a graduate of École Polytechnique engineering school in Palaiseau near Paris, and a French Corps des mines engineer. He was decorated as a knight of the Legion of Honor in April 2015
